van halen,s amazing debut album was released in 1978.this album has just gotta be one of the strongest most kicka@@hard rock debut albums ever.from the first cut;runnin, with the devil you knew as a rock fan that this band was like NO other.eruption is an amazing smack in the face work of guitar mastery from eddie.every song on this album just smokes.there are no [filler]tracks.this l.a. band was out to blow the plaster off your walls if you cranked this album loud enough.i wish i would have seen van halen on this tour or any bettween 1978 and 1984,my favorite period of van halen is when david lee roth was lead singer.no disrespect to sammy hagar.if you get this album.turn it up loud.
If you've seen the movie Little Nicky, you'll recognize the riff immediately. Next comes Feel Your Love Tonight, which is obviously about sex, or at least about begging for sex, followed by the soft and soothing Little Dreamer. The album starts with my personal favorite, Runnin' With The Devil. 1978 is the year that AC/DC released Let There Be Rock, which is a great album, but my favorite album of that year is Van Halen's landmark self-titled debut, which features many classics. The final track is On Fire, which basically encourages you to listen to Van Halen so that the band can 'ride your sonic-wave'. The next song, Jamie's Cryin', is a very important one that shows appreciation for a woman's feelings, followed by Atomic Punk, which has amazing guitars and interesting lyrics.
Next comes I'm The One, a song about the music biz and performing live that urges fans to "show their love".
This song features lyrics about the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and one of the best guitar solos on the album.
It's downright funny when he says that "I'm your ice cream man" and that "all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy".
Eddie Van Halen is an amazing and very unique guitar player, and this is evident on almost every riff and solo on this album.
The next-to-last song on the album is a partially acoustic number called Ice Cream Man, which Dave dedicates 'to the ladies'.
Next comes the awesome instrumental Eruption, which lasts less than 2 minutes yet manages to show off many of Eddie's guitar skills, the likes of which I've never heard anywhere else.
The third song is a cover of You Really Got Me by The Kinks, followed by Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, in which singer David Lee Roth reveals that his love is "rotten to the core".
The sexual innuendo is very clear and it's a very fun song to listen to.
I recommend you listen to Van Halen so that you can enjoy pure and simple classic rock.
I can still go back to this album after listening to it for 30 years and hear something new. Nobody could play guitar like Eddie, nobody could sing like Dave. Just one word WOW. If you're going to get one Van Halen cd in your life, GET THIS ONE.
Not my fave VH album but a very good one indeed.Love Dave era Halen - awesome. The remastered version sounds great.
Yes, their first record was probably their best, combining Hard Rock with Heavy Metal, and taking music in general, to places it had never gone before. Van Halen's music focuses more upon good times and has a mostly positive message, rather than dwell on the dark side of life, like some metal bands do.
